My journey towards becoming an End-of-Life Doula happened organically. I had worked at a large corporation in NYC helping over 2,000 employees understand their company benefits and insurance plans, and how best to take advantage of them.
After a short time, I became not only a trusted resource for those employees to ask questions, but I became a confidant. A significant amount of employees were going through what may be the worst time of their lives- whether they were figuring out how to come to terms with a shocking diagnosis that they received for themselves or a loved one, or grieving someone's passing, and I became the person that would be there to listen and help guide them through what what happening.
It wasn't to long after that I discovered that I could be an End-of-Life Doula and be that trusted resource for others in my community. I went through a training program with INELDA (International End of Life Doula Association), started volunteering with East End Hospice, and immersed myself in this world by starting Beyond Sound and Sky.
About Me
Though we will all get to the end of our lives eventually, death and the dying process is not something that is generally discussed and it makes many people incredibly uncomfortable. Because of this phenomenon, many people enter the later stages of their lives or pass away without having come to terms with it, nor having any discussion of their wishes with their loved ones, leaving their families with the burden of making decisions that they shouldn't have to make.
As an End-of-Life Doula I can bridge that gap-- I know the questions to ask, I can provide support and care, and guide loved ones along the way. When a family is able to use a doula, there are less questions as to what their loved one would have wanted or how they were feeling, and at the end, instead of grappling with uncertainty, loved ones can try to celebrate the life that was lived and will be missed.
